Inpatient Psychiatric Unit provide a wide range of direct patient care and personal care duties under the direction of the nurse manager. They assist in treatments, procedures and diagnostic

examinations of Veteran patients. As part of the nursing team, they also provide more than just health care, they also look out for the psychological, social, and spiritual well-being of

Veterans. “It’s cool to build a relationship with the Veterans. Usually, we get to know them the most because we're on the unit seeing the Veterans in some cases every 15 minutes,” said

Jordan Clarke, nursing assistant. Clarke has worked in the inpatient psychiatric unit at VA Salt Lake City for nearly four years, working with Veterans in a mental health crisis or detoxing

from drugs or alcohol. He says the best part of working inpatient psychiatric unit is getting to know the Veterans. He worked as a nursing assistance in the psychiatric unit of  a private

medical center before coming to VA and says the big difference is the mission: the VA wants to help Veterans succeed. “Here the Veteran is the center of attention, ensuring they get the care
