Office of Research and Development (ORD) has recognized Atlanta VA’s Dr. Vincent Marconi as a 2025 John Blair Barnwell Award recipient.  “This recognition is a testament to Dr. Marconi’s

outstanding contributions, leadership, and the profound impact of his work,” stated the notice from ORD.  As a U.S. Air Force Veteran who was called to active duty in 2005, Dr. Marconi is a

shining example of how Veterans who have already given so much to this country continue to serve in the VA. His pioneering studies on anti-retro-viral therapy for HIV revealed the mechanisms

of the infection, leading to new interventions to reduce inflammation in people with HIV and those with COVID-19. In fact, Dr. Marconi’s research on infectious diseases has significantly

advanced our understanding of both these viruses.  The Barnwell Award is ORD’s highest honor for outstanding achievement in clinical science. The award aims to recognize senior VHA

investigators who have achieved international acclaim for clinical research accomplishments in areas of prime importance to VA's research mission and who have also demonstrated a high

level of clinical commitment to the patient population. Dr. Marconi shares the award with the research team. “It is a tremendous honor to receive this award on behalf of our clinical and

research teams in recognition of the generosity and sacrifices of our Veterans, research participants, and my family particularly during the COVID pandemic.”
