Sdg&e's mission evolves as majority now buy power from community choice aggregators

San Diego Gas & Electric‘s mission has evolved from power generation to delivery as a majority of customers now buy electricity from local community choice aggregators. The company

announced Monday that 1 million customers — approximately 80% in San Diego County — now buy power from either San Diego Community Power or Clean Energy Alliance. That milestone has resulted

in a new mission for the utility. The company said that it’s primary focus now is on developing and operating a “best-in-class energy delivery infrastructure” to deliver power from renewable

resources while connecting battery storage, electric vehicle charging stations and other clean technologies. “Our mission at SDG&E has evolved, but we couldn’t be more energized as we

focus on building America’s most innovative energy grid that delivers a safe and reliable supply of electricity to customers,” said Caroline Winn, CEO of SDG&E. “We expect electricity

demand to double over the next two decades, and we’re laser-focused on expanding the grid to accommodate building and transportation electrification,” she said. SDG&E continues to

provide metering, billing and customer service to community aggregation customers. Charges from the CCAs for electric generation are included in utility bills, along with SDG&E’s charges

for electric delivery. Twelve municipalities in the county now offer community power, with two more expected to do so in 2024. Customers can still buy electricity from SDG&E, paying

only the actual cost, with no markup, but the utility expects 90% of customers will move to CCAs by next year.
