ABSTRACT Mantle geochemical enrichment beneath the Iceland–Faeroes hotspot has been episodic, suggesting that blobs rather than a continuous plume may be rising in the region. Recurring rift
propagation southward from central Iceland causing progressive melting of the lower crust followed by the upper mantle, best explains the geochemical variations found along the south-west
