ABSTRACT SINCE its initial publication1, the catalogue of oligonucleotides generated by T1 RNase digestion of _Escherichia coli_ 16S RNA has undergone a number of revisions and

refinements2–5. At present the literature contains two rather dissimilar documented versions of this catalogue2,3 and disagreements hold for 50% of sequences octamer and larger3. Confusion

is not relieved by recent publications concerning the 16SrRNA primary structure6,7 that now incorporate some of the oligomer sequences of Uchida _et al._3 but reject others, without resort
