The London Mayor issued a defiant message, calling on Londoners to go about business as usual because terrorists “hate our way of life”. The Labour politician was speaking in the wake of
Wednesday’s horrifying attack on the city which left four dead, including the man responsible who was shot by armed officers. Speaking to Sky News on Thursday, the Mayor said: “We mustn’t
cower, we mustn’t allow the terrorists to succeed and destroy our way of life or divide our communities. “We’ve got to show them that we are resilient, democracy, justice, civil liberties,
our way of life, tolerance, are values they hate!” He continued: “They hate the fact that here in London, Christians, Jews, Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, Hindus, those who are a member of
organised faiths and those who aren’t don’t simply tolerate each other, we respect each other, we celebrate each other, we embrace each other.” Earlier on Thursday, Defence Secretary Sir
Michael Fallon said the attacker had chosen Westminster because “terrorists hate democracy”. The call was echoed by Mr Khan, who added: “They hate the fact we’ve got elected politicians who
go about their job making laws, they hate the fact we’ve got a free press, they hate the fact we’re such a vibrant successful city. “We are the greatest city in the world. This is not the
first time terrorists have tried to destroy our way of life, it’s not the first time they’ve killed Londoners - but we’ve shown in the past we’re resilient, we’ve shown them we’re not going
to cower so we’re going to show them that again today.” A two minutes' silence has taken place to remember those affected by the shocking event. MPs observed the remembrance, shortly
after their usual morning prayers in Commons just after 09:30am. Acting Deputy Commissioner of the Met Police said hundreds of detectives had worked through the night, raiding six addresses
in connection with the attack. So far, eight people have been detained after the searches in London, Birmingham and other areas.
