Whiten silicone sealant and remove mould in 10 minutes with 1 simple item

Silicone sealant is the white lining found around sinks and showers that stops water from getting into fixtures, but unfortunately, it is not immune to becoming mouldy. If you do not air the

bathroom out after showering, then the steam will become trapped, settle onto your walls and cause mould spores to begin growing.  This means the corners of showers with silicone sealant

can become a hotspot for mould and can be incredibly difficult to clean since the material is water resistant. Most household products will not work, and common mould removers like bleach

will only damage the porous silicone material and turn it an unsightly yellow colour. However, Julieanne, an expert from Cleanzen, has shared there is a simple method to get silicone sealant

clean again with hydrogen peroxide.  Julieanne said: “While chlorine bleach is generally the most effective mould killer, you can actually use hydrogen peroxide to kill mould and even

lighten stains. Unfortunately, this does work more slowly and may require multiple applications but it is a safe and less harsh alternative.” Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful oxidizer, which

means it releases oxygen to break down mould and make it more difficult for the spores to grow back. This makes it great for using on silicone sealant.  What is fantastic about hydrogen

peroxide is that it is also a disinfectant, which means it will remove any other contaminants on the material, such as bacteria and mildew.  Hydrogen peroxide takes a few minutes to work as

it needs time to break down the mould, but it is an easy way to remove mould without having to scrub it or use harsh chemicals. HOW TO CLEAN SILICONE SEALANT TO GET RID OF MOULD To begin,

pour the hydrogen peroxide (3% solution) into an empty spray bottle. Spray a generous amount of the cleaning solution onto the mouldy area of the silicone sealant. Ensure it is wet but not

dripping; otherwise, the solution will not stay in place. Then, leave the hydrogen peroxide alone to sit on the silicone sealant for at least 10 minutes to give it time to break down the

mould spores. Once the time is up, use a cloth or sponge to wipe the silicone sealant, and the mould should come away easily.  Wipe down the silicone sealant and rinse with warm water to

remove the hydrogen peroxide. Then, dry the area, and it should be completely cleaned. In the future, make sure to open a window and the bathroom door after showering to allow steam to

escape, and it will prevent mould from growing in the room in the future.
