A Bradford mum has been jailed for 20 months after a court heard she followed her teenage son to a bus stop and struck him twice in the face with a saucepan. Bradford Crown Court heard how
the attack left the youngster with a deep laceration to his cheek and a chipped tooth. Prosecutor Imran Khan said the boy, who must not be identified for legal reasons, had moved out of his
mum’s home, but returned to the property to collect some clothes. The boy said his mum appeared to be drunk and when he left she followed him out and initially punched him twice in the face.
Mr Khan said boy, who suffered a bust lip, then went to get the bus, but the defendant then armed herself with the pan and went after him. In her police interview the woman, who is not
being named to protect the identity of her son, admitted that she “whacked” him twice with the pan. Mr Khan said the defendant cried when she was shown photographs of the injuries caused to
the teenager and said she was ashamed of herself. The woman pleaded guilty to a charge of child cruelty and today Judge Sophie McKone said only an immediate prison sentence was appropriate
in such a case. Barrister Lea Levine, for the woman, said her client had expressed clear remorse and regret and was incredibly ashamed of what she had done. Miss Levine said her client had
started to seek counselling since the incident and accepted she had a problem with alcohol and binge drinking. Judge McKone described the woman’s behaviour towards her son as “callous, cruel
and violent” and said it had led to an unprovoked attack on him. The judge said the defendant was basically angry that the boy had moved out and highlighted that the incident hadn’t ended
with the punches to his face. "You armed yourself with a saucepan, a weapon, and followed him as he went to get the bus and hit him with it,” said the judge. “You hit your son in the
face with a saucepan causing a deep laceration to his cheek and a chipped tooth. As a mother you were there to protect your son and show him love. You did exactly the opposite.” The judge
said character references submitted on behalf of the defendant showed a different side to her and she accepted the woman’s remorse was genuine. Judge McKone rejected a submission that a
suspended sentence could be imposed and said only an immediate custodial sentence was appropriate. GET ALL YORKSHIRE CRIME AND COURT STORIES SENT TO YOUR PHONE Get all the latest crime and
