University of Tasmania Professor Richard Eccleston, the panel will include LGTBI activist Rodney Croome, Very Reverend Richard Humphrey, and former Tasmanian Anti-Discrimination Commissioner

Robin Banks.

Human Rights Commissioner Ed Santow will also be in Launceston as part of the Tamar Valley Peace Festival. He will be a key speaker at the event.

Professor Eccleston said panellists would look at the relationship between religion and individual rights in a “diverse, multicultural community”.

“We have a great panel with a range of different views about what sorts of challenges the Tasmanian community faces,” he said.

“It’s also a great opportunity to hear from Ed Santow. He’s a relatively new Human Rights Commissioner for Australia.”

While Tasmania had a "strong, proud history of human rights”, Professor Eccleston said it was important to discuss potential issues of tension.

“The US is an example of somewhere with those growing tensions, and it’s important to manage potential tensions in the community.”

Panellist Robin Banks said she was looking forward to discussing issues of religion and individual rights at the forum.

“Sometimes we find situations where people believe there is a conflict between equality rights and freedom of religion rights, and the question then becomes, how do we resolve those

conflicts?”

Rodney Croome said freedom of religion was important.

“Everyone should be free to hold their own beliefs and practice their own faith. But I also strongly believe that religious freedom should not be used as a justification for discrimination.

“No one should be disadvantaged because of their religious belief, but at the same time, no one should be allowed to disadvantage others in the name of religion.”

The discussion will be held at UTAS’s Newnham Campus from 6pm to 7.30pm on Thursday RELATED STORIES:
