A slew of new motoring updates have been announced for June 2025, which will introduce pivotal changes for drivers, including modifications to parking regulations and driving licence rules.

From 10 June 2025, as confirmed by the current Labour government, revisions in driving licence requirements for zero emission vehicles will come into effect. This major shake-up will enable

those with a category B driving licence to operate an electric or hydrogen vehicle weighing up to 4.25 tonnes — a nod to the heavier batteries of green vehicles — without being emissions in

return for loosening the weight restrictions. It opens the roads to category B licence holders to drive 4.25 tonne electric vans without needing an extra five hours of training, equalling

towing rights with that of petrol and diesel alternatives. READ MORE: TESCO ANNOUNCES 7PM 'CHARGE' BVRLA Chief Executive Toby Poston acknowledged the significance of the move,

commenting: "Out-of-date regulations are hampering the transition to a cleaner, greener van fleet, so we welcome any modernisation to reflect the profiles of today's vehicles.

These changes are long overdue and leave a couple of other urgent updates waiting in the wings. "The BVRLA, in coalition with its Zero Emission Van Plan partners, continues to call for

this red tape to be eliminated. Regulatory barriers remain a key blocker for van fleet decarbonisation, alongside the lack of fiscal support and concerns over charging. Government knows the

levers that need to be pulled and we are optimistic that today's changes mark the start of more progress to come.", reports Birmingham Live. HMRC has announced new advisory fuel

rates for company car drivers, effective from 1 June 2025. Rates for LPG and electric vehicles remain unchanged this quarter, while some diesel and petrol rates have decreased. Hybrid cars

are classified as either petrol or diesel cars for this purpose, and the old rates can be used until 30 June 2025. Ed Miliband, the Energy Secretary, is proposing a significant expansion of

solar power by harnessing the "untapped potential" of Britain's car parks. A consultation is underway to gather views on how to encourage the construction of solar panel

canopies above parking spaces at supermarkets, offices, and shopping villages. This initiative is seen as a win-win, as it would make better use of large car parks while generating more

green electricity, potentially reducing bills for businesses. Motorists would also benefit from more shaded parking spots and potentially a larger number of electric car charging stations,

which could be powered directly by the panels, according to the Government. Motorists could save up to £1,100 annually as the government slashes bureaucracy, making it simpler than ever to

install electric vehicle charging points. Lilian Greenwood, Future of Roads Minister, has announced that from today (29 May 2025), more drivers and businesses will no longer need to submit a

planning application to install public or private EV sockets. By reducing paperwork, more EV owners with a driveway will find it easier, quicker and cheaper to install a private chargepoint

and power up their EVs at home. This could result in savings of up to £1,100 a year compared to running a petrol or diesel car. Car finance. Motorists are awaiting a statement from the

Supreme Court and the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) about the future of the car finance scandal. A decision from both is expected soon, although there is no concrete deadline for

either.
