GATESHEAD ARE LOOKING FOR A NEW MANAGER AFTER MISSING OUT ON THE NATIONAL LEAGUE PLAY-OFFS 16:59, 02 Jun 2025Updated 17:00, 02 Jun 2025 Carl Magnay has stepped down as manager of Gateshead

just weeks after revealing he was unsure what a failure to reach the National League play-offs meant for his future at the International Stadium. After spending two successful spells at the

International Stadium during his time as a player and player-coach, the former Hartlepool United and Grimsby Town defender agreed to return to the Heed as manager following short spells on

the coaching staff at MK Dons and Carlisle United. His return to the south bank of the Tyne was seen as a chance to continue the progress made under former Newcastle United duo Mike

Williamson and Rob Elliot - but an ongoing injury crisis, uncertainty over the future of the club and key departures during the January transfer window hampered attempts to move forwards.

With captain and club legend Greg Olley already ruled out for the season, the likes of key defenders Joe Grayson and Kenton Richardson and goalkeeper Tiernan Brooks have spent large spells

of the campaign on the sidelines. Top goalscorer Owen Oseni and influential midfielder Callum Whelan made respective moves to St Mirren and Carlisle United in January and on-loan defender

Ben Radcliffe returned to Derby County before moving on to reunite with former Heed boss Rob Elliot at Crawley Town. Any attempts to add to the Gateshead squad proved fruitless as a

potential takeover involving a consortium led by former Everton and Sunderland striker Victor Anichebe rumbled on in the background. Article continues below New faces did arrive within the

final six weeks of the season but they were unable to arrest a drop in form that led to the Heed’s bid for the National League play-offs coming to a disappointing end on the final day of the

season. Magnay admitted he had ‘no idea’ what lied ahead for him at the club in the aftermath of a final day draw with Southend United - and it has now been confirmed he has stepped down

from his role with immediate effect. A statement released on the club website on Monday read: It read: “Gateshead FC can confirm that Carl Magnay has tended his resignation as first-team

manager. “We wish to thank Carl for his efforts during his time as manager of Gateshead FC, and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours. "We will be looking to appoint a new

manager as swiftly and efficiently as possible - prospective applicants are invited to email [email protected] with their CV for consideration. “Applications will close by 5pm on

Friday, June 6. Successful applicants will be invited to interview during the week commencing Monday, June 9.” Article continues below Magnay could now link up with former Gateshead

assistant manager Ian Watson, who was announced as South Shields' new manager last week. He is not the only departure from Gateshead since the end of the season as club captain Greg

Olley left the International Stadium after his contract came to an end and chairman Neil Pinkerton brought an end to his six-year reign. Another departure was confirmed on Monday as club

doctor Ross Floyd also left the club for family reasons.
