When Prince Harry and Meghan declared their intentions to step back from royal duties, the nation reeled in shock. Their decision stemmed from the pressures of royal life, leading to a
dramatic announcement about their desire to step back from working for the Firm full-time. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex initially wanted to serve the monarchy on a more casual basis,
aiming to forgo public funds and earn independently. Following their bombshell decision, an urgent Sandringham Summit was summoned by the late Queen Elizabeth II. This critical meeting
brought together King Charles, Prince William, Prince Harry, the late Queen, and her private secretary to deliberate over the future role of the Sussexes. A Channel 5 documentary, Megxit:
Inside The Sandringham Summit, grants an intimate look at the negotiations that led to the ultimate withdrawal of the couple from royal duties. Industry experts offer fresh perspectives on
the behind-the-scenes dynamics during the conversation that heralded a complete severance for the couple from the institution. The film reveals that Prince William found himself
"completely broken" after the conclusion of the talks, deeply affected by his brother's departure, reports the Mirror. Royal commentator Charlotte Griffiths shared insights,
saying: "William must have felt such a sense of relief, but also great sadness because he was really, officially losing his brother." She added that at the time, it was believed
William began to mourn his sibling, expressing: "What I heard at the time was that William started grieving for his brother at that point, really grieving, like he'd lost, not only
his mother, years ago, but his brother as well and I think he was just genuinely quite sad, and completely broken." Meghan stayed in Canada and was absent from the pivotal Sandringham
Summit, and she was unable to speak remotely, leaving Harry to navigate the negotiations alone. Following the discussions, which resulted in the 'nuclear' option of a full break
from the royals, Harry was stripped of his police protection - a loss he lamented in his autobiography Spare and has since unsuccessfully sought to regain for UK visits. After the summit,
the brothers took refuge in the Sandringham gardens for a private moment, as detailed by experts in a documentary. Royal biographer Andrew Morton mentioned: "Harry expected to be
treated by a harangue from his brother," but instead, according to Newsweek's Royal correspondent Jack Royston: "Harry got the chance to do what he wanted to do, which was
explain himself to his brother," revealing a different side to their conversation. "William didn't argue back, he listened," the expert elaborated: "I think it was
important for Harry to feel like he had a chance to say his piece, and it was important for William to come away from it feeling like he didn't turn it into a big argument or shut it
down." The frosty relationship between Princes William and Harry has been well-documented, with the brothers becoming increasingly distant over recent years. While William may have
initially felt a sense of loss when Harry decided to step back from royal duties in 2020, their relationship took a further hit following Meghan and Harry's explosive interview with
Oprah Winfrey in 2021, where they laid bare their reasons for leaving the UK. In the couple's self-titled Netflix documentary series, a poignant moment was captured when Harry received
a text message from William following the interview. Although the content of the message wasn't revealed, Harry appeared visibly emotional after reading it. The Sussexes haven't
held back in expressing their grievances with the Royal Family, with Harry even admitting in a BBC interview, following the loss of his latest appeal over police security, that his father,
King Charles, "won't speak" to him and that he "doesn't know how long" the monarch has left. Despite Harry's expressed wish for reconciliation Royal
commentator Jennie Bond told Sky News: "Doesn't know where he goes from here. "He's bristling with anger and resentment and mistrust of the royal household, and despair
over his father's attitude, I suppose. It's just such a sad and sorry saga. I would hope there might be some kind of reconciliation but although Harry says he wants reconciliation,
he doesn't think he can do that now."
