DVSA warning for drivers with towbar on their car over lesser-known ruleThis rule applies to drivers of cars, motorbikes, car-derived vans as well as dual-purpose vehicles - here are more

detailsComments Rebecca Robinson and Sonia Sharma Parenting Reporter08:58, 05 Jun 2025A warning has been issued to drivers who have a towbar on their vehicle(Image: PA) Drivers with a towbar

on their car are being warned about a lesser-known rule involving speed limits. If you have a towbar on your vehicle, it's not always safe to do the speed limit on UK motorways.

The limit of 70mph applies to most vehicles. However, those towing caravans or trailers must drop down to 60mph. This applies to cars, motorbikes, car-derived vans, and dual-purpose

vehicles.

‌ The DVSA said: "The speed limit is the absolute maximum - it does not mean it’s safe to drive at this speed in all conditions." Buses, coaches, and minibuses of more than 12 metres in

length must also abide by the 60mph rule, as well as goods vehicles heavier than 7.5 tonnes in England and Wales.

‌ While the speed limit changes for towing vehicles on the motorway, the standard 30mph maximum in built-up areas remains the same, reports the Express. The DVSA has also introduced a new

scheme that allows motorists to settle fines using Apple Pay and Google Pay.

The new tool means drivers who don’t have access to a physical Debit Card can still pay on-the-spot fines in seconds. A DVSA spokesperson said: “Many people will find this quicker and easier

than a standard card payment, especially when using a mobile phone.

"The change means the payment screen for standard card payments will look slightly different. You will not have to change the way you use the payment system and many people will not notice a

difference. It also means you can choose to use Apple Pay and Google Pay."

Driving without a valid MOT certificate in place is also illegal while driving without vehicle insurance or road tax is also serious. Overloading a vehicle or tampering with its emissions is

also a problem that could result in roadside penalties being dished out.

Meanwhile, motorists are being warned of a £200 fine and six penalty points for breaking a Highway Code rule on country roads. As temperatures rise and more horse riders take to the

countryside, experts are warning drivers to take extra care when passing horses.

Article continues below Experts at BigWantsYourCar.com are reminding people of their responsibility to share the road safely and respectfully with vulnerable users such as horse riders. A

spokesperson said: "Horses can be unpredictable, and sudden noises, revving engines or speeding cars can easily startle them. This could result in the rider being thrown or losing control,

which could lead to a serious accident involving both the horse and the motorist."

Under Rule 215 of the Highway Code, drivers must pass horses “at no more than 10mph and allow at least two metres of space.” Motorists are also advised to be patient, avoid sounding their

horn and wait until it is safe to overtake.

Failing to follow these rules can lead to a £200 fine and six penalty points for careless or inconsiderate driving. In more serious cases, drivers could even face prosecution in court. Here

are more details.
