Liz kendall set to issue 'needed' update over £5bn dwp cuts on wednesday

2025 Liz Kendall has spoken out over the growing fury over her £5 billion Department for Work and Pensions ( DWP ) cuts. Ms Kendall, the DWP boss and Labour Party government minister, has

spoken out amid a growing fury over the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Universal Credit shake-up. In a speech to the Institute for Public Policy Research thinktank, Ms Kendall will

argue for the "need" to restrict eligibility. The speech will douse cold water on hopes the DWP could u-turn and backtrack amid the prospect of a Labour backbench rebellion.

“Unless we ensure public money is focused on those with the greatest need and is spent in ways that have the best chance of improving people’s lives, the welfare state simply won’t be there

welfare reform. Not for the sake of it, but to save it.” Ruth Curtice, the chief executive of the Resolution Foundation thinktank, said: “Reform should consider the whole population – from

low-income working families to wealthy pensioners – and be driven by the goal of improving livelihoods, rather than a rush to hit fiscal rules.” Article continues below Ms Kendall will argue

that Labour’s aim is “to give people real hope. To give people a better future. To create the jobs and opportunities, and decent public services, people need to build a better life.”

Stephen Evans, the chief executive of the Learning and Work Institute thinktank, said: “The employment support will get a significant number of people into work and it will save the taxpayer

money, so it’s a good thing to do, and it’s substantial: it’s almost doubling the amount that is being spent now. "It will genuinely make a difference. But it cannot plausibly offset

the 3.2 million people having cuts to their benefits.” It comes after 100 backbenchers are said to have signed aletter calling for a re-think over the cuts. Article continues below And 42

signed a public statement this month calling the package “impossible to support”. “The planned cuts of more than £7bn represent the biggest attack on the welfare state since George Osborne

ushered in the years of austerity and over 3 million of our poorest and most disadvantaged will be affected,” it says. “Whilst the government may have correctly diagnosed the problem of a

broken benefits system and a lack of job opportunities for those who are able to work, they have come up with the wrong medicine. Cuts don’t create jobs, they just cause more hardship.”
