12月12日，國際明愛會慶祝成立70週年。該機構秘書長磊思•若望和梵蒂岡媒體談這個紀念日的重要性，以及在新冠疫情期間明愛會面臨的迫切挑戰。

在慶祝國際明愛會成立70週年的機會上，該機構秘書長磊思•若望（Aloysius
John）向梵蒂岡媒體表示，“國際明愛會的創立就如‘教會伸出的關心和慈愛之手’，旨在服務和促進人類發展，尤其是社會中的貧困者、遭遺棄者，以及最弱勢群體。在這70年中，國際明愛會一直由基本價值觀來引導，諸如保護人性尊嚴、基本權利及社會正義。這些價值觀始終是我們工作的基礎”。磊思·若望接著表示，“我們使命的核心是與窮人相遇，而且永遠是與窮人相遇，就如教宗在2019年的國際明愛會全體大會上提醒我們的”。
在這70年中，明愛會臨在於所有的重大人道危機中。現今，在一個快速和深刻改變的世界中，明愛會面對著哪些更大的挑戰呢？磊思·若望說，“與1951年相比，人道援助工作發生了重大改變。現今，我們面臨著複雜而持久的危機，無論是自然的還是人為的。政治分歧、戰爭、宗教衝突與氣候變化影響混合在一起，這些帶來的悲慘後果使得難民和國內的流離失所者增加”。此外，國際明愛會秘書長也表示，“我們還要面對嚴重的不平等和新形式的貧困現象”。
