At WTVAHCS Health Care System (WTVAHCS), National Salute to Veteran Patient Week is more than just a celebration—it’s a testament to the strength, resilience, and unwavering support Veterans
receive as they navigate the challenges of illness, including cancer. For JODIE GRAVES, affectionately known as Mr. Cancer-Free, this week serves as a recognition of the dedicated team that
played a role in his journey to healing. From the moment Mr. Graves arrived at GEORGE H. O’BRIEN, JR. VA MEDICAL CENTER, he experienced firsthand what VA’s commitment to teamwork truly
means. Unable to move due to excruciating pain, he sat in the front entrance parking lot, speaking with his social worker over the phone. “She said, ‘Hold on, Mr. Graves. Don’t hang up on
me. I’m going to get assistance to meet you right where you are,’” he recalled. Within minutes, VA POLICE OFFICERS arrived at his car, greeting him with smiles and walking him inside. That
moment set the tone for his journey—one defined by compassion, coordination, and an interdisciplinary approach to care. A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO HEALING What Mr. Graves came to realize was
that healing extends beyond the medical care provided by doctors and nurses. His journey was supported by a full team of professionals, each playing a critical role in his well-being. *
RECREATIONAL THERAPY helped him regain a sense of normalcy with planned events like ART THERAPY and MOVIE DAYS. * NUTRITION AND KITCHEN SERVICES ensured his meals were not only nourishing
but also uplifting. * PHARMACY STAFF carefully managed his medications, preventing setbacks in his treatment. * VA CHAPLAIN SERVICES provided emotional and spiritual support, offering
comfort and a listening ear during his most difficult moments. Throughout VETERAN PATIENT WEEK, Mr. Graves was surrounded by reminders of the care and dedication that define WTVAHCS. From
HAIRCUTS AND BINGO to PAINTING SESSIONS AND COOKIE DECORATING, events organized by the CENTER FOR DEVELOPMENT AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT (CDCE) offered moments of joy and connection. “Mr. Graves
is truly a gem to us,” said KELLI STOLLE, VOLUNTARY SERVICE SPECIALIST. “His happiness and well-being are our main mission. We want to make sure he feels loved, valued, and supported—not
just this week, but every day.” A STORY OF HOPE AND GRATITUDE As Mr. Graves reflects on his journey, he carries a deep sense of peace. He knows now that his battle was never his alone. His
healing is the result of a compassionate, dedicated team that rallied around him, offering not just medical treatment but also hope, faith, and love. Veteran Patient Week at WTVAHCS is a
powerful reminder that healing is not just about the body—it’s about restoring the spirit. And for Mr. Graves, it’s a journey he will never forget.
