The Lake City VA Medical Center Emergency Department and Surgical Team proved to be a critical lifeline during an unforeseen medical crisis, ensuring a Veteran received the urgent and

lifesaving care they needed. A patient arrived at the Lake City VA Emergency Department, reporting persistent right hip pain that had lasted for three months. During her rounds, a Health

Care Technician noticed alarming signs. Without hesitation, she called for immediate assistance from the emergency staff. The patient experienced a critical medical emergency that required

prompt attention and intervention. Typically, the Lake City VAMC does not have trauma surgeons readily available, as this specialty is primarily offered at our Malcom Randall VA Medical

Center. Fortunately, by a stroke of luck, a trauma surgeon was on-site and lead the surgical team to deliver immediate assistance. The Veteran received prompt and lifesaving care and was

quickly transported to a local hospital, additional care was provided, and he is now stable. We are incredibly grateful that the Veteran was in VA care when this emergency arose. The stars

aligned perfectly, allowing us to deliver the exceptional care that the Veteran desperately needed.  Several other essential services played a crucial role in this effort, including

Pharmacy, Laboratory, Respiratory Therapy, Intensive Care Unit, Radiology, Housekeeping, Logistics and Medical Administrative services.  The team showed their ability to anticipate the needs

of this Veteran and improvised when the unexpected occurred, showing their commitment to resilience. This experience truly highlights the remarkable collaboration and teamwork that are
