Veterans from the G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center showcased their determination, skill, and passion for wellness at the 2024 National Veterans Golden Age Games, held this year in
Salt Lake City, Utah. These games, founded in 1985, provide Veterans aged 55 and older with a unique opportunity to compete, learn new skills, and experience the powerful impact of staying
active under the motto “Fitness for Life.” Our Veterans put their passion and dedication on full display, with performances that had the crowds cheering and spirits soaring: * TONY
FITZGERALD faced off in Free Throw Basketball (70-75), pushing through tough competition to secure an impressive 4th place finish! * JANIS BURKES-CAVETT participated in multiple events,
achieving 4th place in Free Throw Basketball (55-59), a remarkable 1st place (Gold) in Horseshoes (55-59), and a 7th place ribbon in Air Rifle (55-59). * BARRY TAYLOR showcased his talent in
Shuffleboard, earning a 1st place (Gold) finish in the 65-69 age group. * CYNTHIA GALATHE displayed remarkable versatility, claiming 1st place (Gold) in both Table Tennis and Powerwalking
for ages 70-75, a 4th place ribbon in Air Rifle (70-75), a 3rd place (Bronze) in Shuffleboard (70-75), and a 4th place in Horseshoes (70-75). The National Veterans Golden Age Games offer
much more than just competition; they are a platform for Veterans to come together, build friendships, and encourage each other to stay active and engaged in their communities. This year’s
games featured a wide range of sports, from basketball and table tennis to air rifle and shuffleboard, offering something for everyone. “Participating in these games is a wonderful way for
our Veterans to stay physically active, build camaraderie, and boost their overall well-being,” said DeVonda Elliot, Recreation Therapy Supervisor, “We are incredibly proud of all our
participants for their dedication, hard work, and competitive spirit. They truly embody the ‘Fitness for Life’ motto.” The games also featured various exhibitions where Veterans could learn
new skills, explore adaptive sports, and receive health and wellness education. The goal is to inspire all Veterans to embrace an active lifestyle, regardless of age or physical ability. At
the G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center, we are committed to supporting our Veterans in their pursuit of health and wellness, both on and off the field. This year’s National Veterans
Golden Age Games are a testament to what can be achieved when Veterans are encouraged to push their limits, stay active, and enjoy the benefits of physical fitness. Congratulations to all
our Veteran athletes who represented us so proudly at this year’s games. We look forward to seeing even more remarkable achievements in the future! For more information about the National
