The G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, has taken a major step forward in cardiac care by successfully implanting the AVEIR™ DR, the world’s first dual-chamber

leadless pacemaker system. Approved by the FDA in June 2023, this innovative device provides a minimally invasive solution for treating Veterans with slow or irregular heart rhythms. On

March 18, Electrophysiologist Dr. Samer Siouffi performed the medical center’s first AVEIR DR implantation, offering a breakthrough alternative to traditional pacemakers. FEWER COMPLICATIONS

Unlike conventional pacemakers which require leads (wires) and a surgical pocket under the skin, the AVEIR DR is implanted directly into the heart, reducing complications and allowing for a

faster recovery. The system consists of two small devices—one in the right atrium and one in the right ventricle—that communicate wirelessly to regulate the heart’s rhythm. This

state-of-the-art pacemaker enhances the patient experience by eliminating chest scars, reducing movement restrictions and minimizing the risk of infections or lead-related issues. The device

also features pre-fixation mapping technology, enabling precise placement and reducing repositioning attempts. Designed to be retrievable, it allows for easy replacement if needed, ensuring

long-term adaptability for Veterans. Cardiology Section Chief Dr. Howard A. Baker III emphasized the impact of this advancement. “Abbott’s AVEIR leadless pacemaker is a great option for our

Veterans and a unique opportunity for the state,” says Baker. Siouffi added that the mapping feature allows precise placement before securing the device, improving accuracy and patient

outcomes. The result is Veterans are receiving safer, more effective treatment options tailored to their needs.
