The Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center (OGJVAMC) will celebrate its 75th anniversary throughout 2025. To mark this occasion, several events for Veterans, employees, volunteers and retirees

will be held.   “On behalf of Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center employees, it has been an honor and a privilege to serve Veterans for the past 75 years. We are grateful to our community

partners, staff and volunteers for their continued support,” Medical Center Director John P. Shealey said. On March 14, 1948, construction began on 31.5 acres that had once been the site for

a large sawmill and lumberyard. At a cost of $6.5 million, it was the largest building project ever to date in the Upper Peninsula. The six-story, 265-bed hospital with 360 staff was  

dedicated on March 5, 1950. Today, OGJVAMC has 57 beds, employs approximately 830 people at its main campus and clinics, and provides primary, specialty and inpatient care to approximately

22,000 Veterans each year. The facility is the most rural VA in the nation, serving 24 counties across 25,864 square miles. OGJVAMC oversees eight Community Based Outpatient Clinics located

in Gladstone, Hancock, Ironwood, Manistique, Marquette, Menominee and Sault Ste. Marie, MI, and Rhinelander, WI. Veterans and the public are encouraged to visit the Iron Mountain VA Facebook
