ERIE , PA — The Erie VA Medical Center police team participated in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Drug Take-Back Event April 26 at the main facility and collected

approximately 116 pounds in prescription drugs.  VISN 4, which is comprised of nine VA campuses, 46 outpatient clinics, and 16 vet centers, including the Erie VA, collected nearly 300lbs of

prescription drugs combined. VA police participate in the event nationwide as part of the DUMP Opioids Act, which requires the Department of Veterans Affairs to designate periods during

which any individual may dispose of controlled substances medications at VA medical facilities with an on-site pharmacy or a physical location dedicated for law enforcement purposes. Each

year, the DEA coordinates a collaborative effort with state and local law enforcement agencies focused on collecting potentially dangerous controlled substances. National Take-Back day

provides a unified opportunity for the public to surrender expired, unwanted, or unused pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications to law enforcement officers for

destruction. “I greatly appreciate the participation from the community, the effort from my department and the support we receive from the Erie VA leadership,” SAID KEVIN KLECKNER, CHIEF OF

POLICE AT THE ERIE VA. “These national take-back events are a great way for the Erie VA police to partner with other agencies to provide another service to our community.  It gives our

veterans a safe, convenient, and responsible way to dispose of medications that are no longer needed.   The amount of prescription drugs taken back at the Erie VA grows with each event, so

we will continue to provide this service and encourage our community to keep participating, as well.” Throughout the year, veterans can also place any unused or expired prescription drugs in

receptacles located in the pharmacy at the Erie VA.
