Columbia , SC — The Department of Veterans Affairs will thank more than 22,000 volunteers for their contributions to Veterans at VA April 16- 22 as part of National Volunteer Week. Locally,

the Columbia VA Health Care System (VAHCS) will recognize the 224 volunteers for the 40,000+ hours they contributed toward caring for Veterans, driving, directing, sitting, serving,

comforting, and listening on a regular basis. “The success of the Columbia VA Health Care System is a direct reflection of the amazing contributions made by our 224 volunteers providing

dedication and commitment to serving 90K Veterans enrolled in our healthcare system,” said Columbia VAHCS Medical Center Associate Director Jeffrey Soots. “We are honored to have them on our

team supporting the most noble mission in our country.” While National Volunteer Week kicks off April 16, VA is inviting everyone in the community to explore how they can use their skills

and unique assets to thank Veterans with service of their own any time of the year. No medical experience is necessary, and volunteers are encouraged to share ideas how they would like to

give back using their unique skills. National Volunteer Week also presents an opportunity for other citizens to join the ranks of volunteers serving Veterans. There are many ways to

volunteer. For instance, individuals, Veteran Service Organizations, or local businesses can volunteer to greet Veterans at the entrance, while providing hot coffee and joyful conversation.

Also, individuals looking for an opportunity to volunteer their time will have many opportunities later this month when our Columbia VA Fisher House opens. “It is a joy to work with the

volunteers at the Columbia VA Health Care System,” said Yolaunda Mincey, Columbia VAHCS Voluntary Service Officer. “They understand that it is important to treat everyone with humanity and

dignity, and to give to others as often as possible. Our volunteers revere and honor the service of the veterans.” Learn more about volunteer opportunities at the Columbia VAHCS, visit the
