The Atlanta VA Health Care System (AVAHCS) Podiatric Residency Program is a 36-month PMSR-RRA which takes place primarily at the Joseph Maxwell Cleland Atlanta VA Medical Center (JMCAVAMC),

in Decatur GA. The JMCAVAMC is a 152-bed, level 1A inpatient hospital, which provides health care for over 400,000 Veterans. Residents will also spend time in private practice settings and

outpatient surgery centers along with core rotations at the VA. Residents will also spend two months each at Martin Army Community Hospital on Fort Moore Army base, a parachutist jump

training site. The program provides excellent, well-rounded training in podiatric medicine, podiatric surgery, reconstructive techniques, and wound care by utilizing this health care

system’s resources. There is great emphasis placed on limb salvage and the patient population provides exposure to significant and unique comorbidities and complex pathology. The training

encompasses the examination, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of primary and secondary lower extremity disorders and covers medical, surgical, diagnostic, and newly emerging

technological treatment approaches, as well as overall knowledge, skills and attitude. Didactic meetings are held at least weekly. The curriculum is designed not only to provide lower

extremity care, but also to enhance the awareness of the correlation between lower extremity problems and the general health and well-being of the total patient. Residents graduate

well-prepared to manage busy clinics and sit for board examinations. Two, 36-month, medical center based, podiatric medical and surgical residency positions will be available beginning in

July of each year. The residents will rotate through various services, achieving competency within well-defined parameters specific to each area of training. The experiences include but are

not limited to: Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, Podiatric Wound Care, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Anesthesia, Plastic Surgery, Radiology, Emergency Medicine, Podopediatrics,

Rheumatology, Pathology, Endocrinology, Infectious Disease, Behavioral Science, Vascular Surgery, and other assigned rotations or experiences. -------------------------
