The team drove to a nearby lake to join Mr. Carter on his first fishing trip, and his response, “this is better than $1,000.00,” signified the importance of their mission. Veteran Bobby

Carter dreamed that one day, he would participate in one of his favorite outdoor hobbies – fishing – again.  A former military and civilian firefighter, Mr. Carter lost the ability to use

his right side due to a stroke.  With the assistance of Dona Leith, Atlanta VA Health Care System Home Based Primary Care Recreational Therapist, Mr. Carter received a customized fishing rod

that is adapted for wheelchair use.  The rod, built by Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) biomedical/engineering students, brings Veteran Carter closer to his dream. The innovation is a

critical component of the VCU Capstone Senior Design project. The fishing apparatus was generously provided by Quality of Life, LLC, a nonprofit working with first responders and Veterans

to return joy to their lives. This is Atlanta VA Healthcare System’s first project with them, and hopefully not the last. Ms. Leith recently accompanied Veteran Carter, three (of a 6-person

team) of the students who built the rod, along with their advisor – who made the trip from Virginia. The team drove to a nearby lake to join Mr. Carter on his first fishing trip, and his

response, “this is better than $1,000.00,” signified the importance of their mission.  We commend the students, instructors, and the nonprofit team for impacting positive change, and making

a difference in the lives of others. In addition, we thank Veteran Carter for his service and his willingness to share this good news with fellow Veterans.
