Padres call new skipper tingler 'a hire to win,' expect contender by 2021

Jayce Tingler of the San Diego Padres met the media for the first time Thursday since being named the team’s manager and he said he “cannot wait” for what comes next. Expectations are high

for Tingler, who has worked with the Texas Rangers, but has never managed a big-league team. According to MLB.com,  the Padres’ general manager A.J. Preller said Thursday that Tingler is “a

hire to win.” Preller fired former manager Andy Green in September on the way to a disappointing 70-92 finish. And apparently, the report went on to say, Tingler has two years to turn the

win, and we’ve got to win now. That’s the expectation.” The team’s high requirements for Tingler stem from their loaded farm system, the emergence of young star Fernando Tatis Jr. and the

promise of other raw talents already in the big leagues, like Chris Paddack and Luis Urias. That’s not to mention the enormous investment in Manny Machado, the Padres’ standout 2019

free-agent signing. Tingler, according to the report, has been touching base with two to three players a day. He described himself to reporters as “a little bit new school and a lotta bit

old school.” As far as not being able to wait, as MLB.com reported, Tingler knows the goal the team has placed before him. “Ultimately,” he said, “I can’t wait to be a part of a group that
