AleSmith Brewing Company will open a dedicated tasting room for its barrel-aged beers on Saturday at its brewery in Miramar. The special “Anvil & Stave” tasting room is decorated to look
like a Prohibition-era speakeasy in an old rail car, with period photos on the walls and 1920s jazz playing in the background. AleSmith owner and brewmaster Peter Zien said he has been
watching the growing popularity of his barrel-aged beers, which are only sold online, and wanted to create a showcase for them. “I wanted to give them a proper home,” he said as he showed
off the new tasting room. “The sky really is the limit with barrel-aged beers. They represent the next level where craft beer is concerned.” The special beers are aged in barrels used for
wines and spirits, primarily bourbon. The aging adds flavor, like “notes to a song,” Zien said. He said he believes the special tasting room is the first of its kind. It’s located adjacent
to the brewery’s Tony Gwynn museum, which will open in July prior to the Major League Baseball All-Star game.
