Monique PrestonKalgoorlie Miner The Porter Street toilet block, which was removed after a car crashed into it last year, will be replaced. City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder councillors voted
unanimously on Monday night to replace the toilet in its previous mid-road location and install bollards around it for protection. There has not been a toilet block on the site since May
last year when it was damaged beyond repair after being hit by a car. The council sent 220 questionnaires to owners and occupiers in the area and other residents were also invited to have
their say on whether the toilet should be replaced. They were also asked whether the Porter Street median strip was the best place for a toilet or if it should be placed elsewhere. The
questionnaire also asked respondents if they had ever used the Port Street toilet. In a report tabled at Monday night’s meeting, council engineering services manager Darren Wallace said 38
responses to the survey were received, with 27 of those wanting the toilet replaced. Nineteen of those people wanted it in the same location. The replacement of the toilet block will be
covered by insurance, except for a $1000 excess. However, the impact-absorbing bollards to be placed around the toilet for its protection and to address concerns of motorists’ safety will
cost the council $10,000. This was not the only option put to councillors in Mr Wallace’s report, however, it was the one he recommended. Two other possible options were also put forward.
One was to relocate the toilet to a safer position in the same area. The other option was to not replace the toilet at all, and receive the insurance payout of $131,300. GET THE LATEST NEWS
