The Squatty Potty—aka the "toilet stool" that encourages pooping the Asian way—may be all set to change the way Americans defecate, but at least one European company is finding
itself at the "receiving end" of the squat vs. sit debate. With a series of graphic how-to posters designed to educate Asian and Middle Eastern tourists on Western style toilet
habits, an unit of the Swiss railways is now asking them to sit, rather than squat on its toilet seats. And to throw used toilet paper into the lavatory, rather than in trash cans. And to
never ever poop in the shower. The first of these posters are now up at the Mount Rigi railway at Lake Lucerne."It happens that guests mount the toilet seats to do their business - and
sometimes they don’t know where to put the toilet paper," Roger Joss, marketing director of the railway, told The Daily Express. The railways is putting it down to a lack of awareness
of Western lifestyles rather than anything else. "Tourists from the Gulf region or Asian countries are not very aware of our way of living. It’s happened that people relieve themselves
in the shower rather than in the toilet," the newspaper also quoted Marcel Furer, head of the regional tourist office, as saying. This is not the first time that non-Western toilet
habits have been seen as a pain up the Western you-know-what. According to the paper, last year Lloyds Bank's Old Broad Street office in central London, also put up instructions telling
foreign staff how to use the loo, with details such as "sit on the toilet - do not stand on it", and "please flush it with your hand and not your foot".In contrast,
however, the Squatty Potty, designed by mother-and-son duo Bobby and Judy Edwards, is taking American loos by storm, well, almost. Ever since it made its debut during Season 6 of the hugely
popular TV show, Shark Tank, sale of the squat-style stool has increased five times and the manufacturers have had to triple manufacturing capacity. Touted as a health tool, rather than a
lifestyle choice, the Squatty Potty’s mission is to "change the way America poops, one stool at a time". And in the bargain, Americans will have less hemorrhoids, pelvic prolapses,
constipation and IBS, it claims. Watch a demonstration here. Video of pYcv6odWfTM So, while globetrotting can be great fun, just remember that you need to do "your business"
differently in different countries.
