with low-cost airlines, the English-speaking Mediterranean island nation of Malta is ideal for a short break from work or a longer holiday. There are amazing sights, great sun and sea and a

burgeoning youth culture with bars, clubs and festivals such as Isle of MTV and the Malta Jazz Festival.    Cool new boutique hotels are opening all the time. Most are historic buildings

renovated by contemporary designers – such as Palazzo Consiglia or SU29, a boutique hotel in an elegant townhouse promising luxury B&B accommodation. Some are new buildings like Gozo’s

recently-opened designer B&B, Murella Living, with each room showcasing a contemporary artistic take on traditional Gozitan life.   Beaches range from golden sands to long stretches of

rock dropping into beautifully clear blue waters. Rocky shores are better for snorkelling and Malta has some of the clearest water in the Med. Diving is hugely popular with 50,000 people a

year coming here each year to dive. There are other land and water sports from rock climbing and mountain biking to windsurfing and paragliding ‒ and just lying in the sun is pretty good

too! Malta is perfect for a sightseeing short break with 7,000 years of history crammed into a tiny nation. From the second oldest stone buildings in the world (older than Stonehenge) to the

towering fortifications of the Knights of Malta; from maze-like Roman catacombs to over-the-top Baroque interiors and secret World War Two headquarters, there is no shortage of fascinating

things to see. Getting around is easy and inexpensive. The capital is largely pedestrianised and small enough to walk across in 30 minutes. While just outside Valletta’s City Gate is the

main bus station: buses go almost everywhere including to the Gozo ferry if you fancy hopping over to this delightful, rural, laid back and friendly island with dramatic coastal landscapes

and great swimming and diving, as well as a restaurant scene as good as on Malta.  And that’s good. The culinary scene here is going from strength to strength. Traditional Mediterranean

cuisine – fish straight from the sea and slow cooked meat as well as fresh pastas, risottos. bakes and pizzas – is being pepped up with modern twists, interesting fusions and imaginative

additions including quality vegetarian cuisine.    Café del Mar – beach club by day, nightclub by night – on the coast next to the National Aquarium is very popular with the young adult

crowd, while Valletta has a growing selection of bars. It is fun to explore Strait Street, a tiny alley once used by the Knights for illegal duels, then by the sailors of the Royal Navy for…

let’s call it R&R. Semi-derelict for a couple of decades, it is now rising again with new bars, eateries and occasional art events and performances. It all spills out along the street

in summer. Malta has a surprisingly vibrant festival scene for such a small country. Each summer, Isle of MTV attracts 50,000 locals and foreigners to the largest free open-air festival in

Europe, preceded by a week of gigs and parties. Past performers include Jess Glynne, Steve Aoki, Jason Derulo, Dizzie Rascal, and Jessie Jay to name but a few.  So whether you’re after some

quiet chill time on the beach, top-quality historic sightseeing or a full-on let-your-hair-down rave – or maybe all three – sunny Malta has it. MALTA IS MORE Malta is home to a myriad of

holiday choices packed into a compact island. Just three hours from the UK, Malta has the history, culture and activities to keep every holidaymaker happy. Whether you’re after a city break,

a foodie weekend, sun-and-sea seclusion, a high-octane party week or simply a warm welcome for families, couples and LGBT travellers, Malta has it all. For more about a perfect island break
