John Percy 12 January 2023 10:30pm GMT Julen Lopetegui is facing a Football Association investigation after allegedly confronting Morgan Gibbs-White in the stormy scenes that followed his
Wolverhampton Wanderers side’s League Cup defeat at Nottingham Forest. Lopetegui is said to have squared up to the Forest forward and FA officials are reviewing video footage of the incident
and will seek observations from both clubs. Wolves are understood to be relaxed about any potential inquiry and do not believe there was physical contact. Gibbs-White was signed from Wolves
by Forest for £25 million in August and celebrated wildly in front of the travelling fans after the final shoot-out penalty was saved by Dean Henderson. Players were then involved in a mass
brawl, which is also to be reviewed by the FA. It is expected that both clubs will be charged with failing to control their players. Lopetegui is under scrutiny for his part in a
confrontation with Gibbs-White, which occurred near the centre circle. The Spaniard was booked in normal time for his complaints over a late penalty decision that went against his team, when
Matheus Nunes was brought down in the box by Emmanuel Dennis. He later insisted it was “very clear” that a penalty should have been awarded. Lopetegui has experienced a number of
contentious decisions since his arrival in England, and held talks with referees chief Howard Webb on Thursday. Webb was at the Wolves training ground for 90 minutes to discuss a number of
recent incidents, including the controversial disallowed goal at Liverpool in the FA Cup tie on Saturday night. Forest, meanwhile, are unlikely to have their request to Manchester United for
Henderson to play in the League Cup semi-finals granted. Henderson, the United loanee, was the hero on Wednesday with two penalty saves to guide Forest through to the last four for the
first time since 1992. He is ineligible to play against his parent club under registration rules unless United grant them consent, and it is understood the chances of him playing are remote.
Steve Cooper, the Forest manager, said: “I don’t know what the possible protocols are but if there is something there to look into then, of course, we will. “We will look into what might be
possible but if there is, the ball is not going to be in our court, is it? “When you send players out you trust them to be looked after and committed to, and not just sort of thrown back.
So, that’s my feeling on a loan – you’re bringing them in to commit to them, not just playing time.” Forest remain in advanced talks with Palmeiras over a potential £18 million deal for
Danilo, the Brazilian midfielder. Forest are hopeful of signing Danilo this month and are understood to be growing confident of striking an agreement.
