Sam Wallace Chief Football Writer 20 November 2018 9:05pm GMT Gordon Taylor could come under pressure to set a date for his retirement as chief executive of the Professional Footballers’
Association when talks resume over the players’ union’s share of the next three years of Premier League television revenue. The 73 year-old has reigned supreme for the last 37 years at the
PFA and the question of his succession is likely to be raised when the negotiations continue over the share of the 2019-2022 television rights – which provide the revenue that drives the
union. _The Telegraph_ revealed on Tuesday that no firm agreement had been made on the PFA’s share of the next rights deal, worth a total of around £8 billion, and negotiating that cut is
critical to Taylor’s power. The chief executive is in dispute with the chairman of his organisation, Walsall defender Ben Purkiss, who has called for an independent review of the PFA in one
of the first public breaking of ranks of the Taylor era. Taylor claims that Purkiss is no longer eligible to serve having become a non-contract player and adjourned the annual general
meeting that was to be held this week. Usually a determined public voice, Taylor refused to comment when approached by the BBC in Manchester on Tuesday. Gordon Taylor | His powerbase - and
who wants to challenge him His previous major collision with the Premier League came in 2001 when the threat of strike action secured the PFA’s historic share of television revenue – in the
1950s it was paid as much as 10 per cent of the deal – although the league may feel Taylor will not be able to marshal his members so effectively again. The Premier League has paid the PFA
£52 million over the past two seasons alone. There is a consensus in football that the PFA has to modernise and become more transparent under new leadership to remain relevant to its members
and Taylor is under pressure to resolve his own future. It will be the judgment of new Premier League chief executive Susanna Dinnage how much power Taylor wields – and chiefly whether he
is capable of persuading the 2018 generation of players to strike if the PFA does not get a satisfactory cut. Newsletter promotion - football nerd - inarticle Former PFA chairman Clarke
Carlisle added his voice to those saying that Taylor should step down. Carlisle, chairman from 2010 to 2013, added that Taylor had been “nothing but supportive of me when many other people
left me on my own”. Carlisle said: “He has done a phenomenal job across four decades, taking it from a small office of six people to what it is today. We’ve seen change at many other
organisations at the top level of the game and I think, after 40 years, he is in a perfect position to pass the union into new hands and have new eyes look at it.”
