RBI REFUSES TO ACCEPT JMM CASE MONEY The Reserve Bank of India has refused to accept the confiscated Rs 50 lakh bribe money in the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha parliamentarians' bribery case
from the Punjab National Bank. The RBI refused to accept the money at the Nauroji Nagar branch of PNB in the absence of a "clear name and number of heads in which the amount is to be
deposited." Following the RBI's refusal to accept the money, PNB's Nauroji Nagar branch manager has approached Special Judge R L Chugh to pass an order regarding "heads
and accounts in which the amount is to be deposited in the interest of justice". The income-tax department has ordered PNB not to touch the money, claiming it has to recover dues from
former JMM MP Shailendra Mahato. The Central Bureau of Investigation has left the decision on the matter to the court. Taking note of the IT department's claim, the court has asked it
to file a reply to PNB's application by July 26. While sentencing former premier P V Narasimha Rao and his former cabinet colleague Buta Singh to three years rigorous imprisonment,
Chugh's predecessor Ajit Bharihoke had on October 12 last year ordered confiscation of the bribe money, meaning thereby the money should be transferred to the government. The court had
convicted the two leaders, solely relying on the evidence of Mahato as an approver. During the trial, Mahato had admitted to having received Rs 50 lakh to vote against the no-confidence
motion in the Lok Sabha on July 28, 1993 to bring down the then P V Narasimha Rao government. THE COMPLETE COVERAGE: THE JMM BRIBERY CASE MARATHON Back to top (c) Copyright 2001 PTI. All
