A nursing professor has been appointed to lead the expansion of research and clinical academic careers for the profession in Liverpool. Professor Michelle Briggs is the new clinical
professor of nursing at the University of Liverpool and director of nursing for research and academic development at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. > “I am thrilled
to be taking up a post that integrates NHS and > academia” > > Michelle Briggs She will take up the post, which is a joint appointment between the higher-education institution and
the trust, from 13 November. In the role, Professor Briggs will lead the expansion of research and clinical academic careers in nursing at both the trust and the university. She will be the
first clinical chair in nursing at the trust and will contribute to the internationally renowned research of the Liverpool Pain Research Institute. Professor Briggs is currently clinical
professor of nursing at the University of Manchester and director of nursing research at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. There she leads the Manchester Clinical Academic Centre
for Nurses, Midwives, and Allied Health professionals. Other roles she holds include being a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Doctoral Clinical Academic Fellowship
panel member and academic career development lead for NIHR Greater Manchester – Applied Research Collaboration. She will also continue as deputy chair of the UK Council of Deans Healthcare
Professionals Clinical Academic Roles and Career Pathways Implementation Network (CARIN). Commenting on her appointment, Professor Briggs said: “I am thrilled to be taking up a post that
integrates NHS and academia, as the NHS is an engine for health and social care research. “I am very much looking forward to working in Liverpool to strengthen the nursing voice and help
release their research power and potential to benefit staff and the communities we serve,” she said. David Melia, chief nursing officer at Liverpool University Hospitals, said: “We are
delighted to have appointed Michelle, who brings a wealth of experience and knowledge with her from working at our partner organisations across the region. “Michelle will bring the skills,
knowledge and experience needed to help us continue improving how we deliver health care services for the benefit of our patients, and to support the development of our nursing careers,” he
said. Jules West, associate director of research and innovation at the trust, added: “We look forward to developing our current research offer, increasing capacity, capability and knowledge,
and continuing to improve the care we deliver to our patients.”
