A new animated film has been launched to showcase the “indispensable contribution” of nurses working in the community and in celebration of the extended International Year of the Nurse and

Midwife. The Queen’s Nursing Institute has produced the short video to highlight the expertise of nurses, their critical role in supporting the health and wellbeing of local communities and

the breadth of work they undertake across the UK. > “In this film we have tried to capture the essence of nursing in > the community” >  > Crystal Oldman From the pioneering work

of Florence Nightingale, to today’s nurses working in community settings, the video aims to “capture the essence of nursing in the community”, said QNI chief executive Dr Crystal Oldman.

The animation, which was funded by UK nurse and healthcare recruitment company Hallam Medical, has been launched as part of extended celebrations of the International Year of the Nurse and

Midwife. The year of 2020 was originally designated as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife by the World Health Organisation to coincide with the 200th birthday of Florence

Nightingale. But in wake of the pandemic, many of the events and celebrations were postponed and the WHO chose to extend the year through 2021 and broaden the theme to cover all health and

care workers across the globe. Dr Oldman said: “It’s impossible to convey in two minutes the highly skilled work and incredible achievements of all nurses who work in the community today.

Crystal Oldman “However, in this film we have tried to capture the essence of nursing in the community, from its roots with Florence Nightingale and her role in the foundation of the QNI, to

the indispensable contribution of today’s nurses working in the community to the protection and promotion of the physical and mental health of people at every stage of life.” Meanwhile,

Deborah McCain, chief executive of Hallam Medical, said the organisation was “proud and delighted to have been able to bring the essential work of the community nursing teams to life through

this animation”. “Working together with the QNI on this project has enabled us to simultaneously show our appreciation for the valuable work of the QNI whilst also highlighting the

relentless and fantastic work of our communities’ teams to everybody,” she added. The film is narrated by actor Stephen McGann who stars in the _BBC_ series Call the Midwife. Speaking in the

animation, he says about community nurses: “We speak truth to power to change policy [and] protect and preserve the nation’s health. "We question. We innovate. We research. We educate.

We advocate. We solve problems. We are experts in delivering care to people of all ages, in homes and communities everywhere.” [embedded content] Today's Nurses in the Community from
