NEW plans to improve prevention and management of patients with vascular disease in Wales have been announced by the country’s health minister, Edwina Hart.
A group of clinicians will review vascular risk management and assessment in Wales and will recommend a future model to reduce the number of people developing the disease.
Possible services could include risk assessments for those at risk of the vascular disease, such as measurement of blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar levels.
The UK National Screening Committee last year recommended that all four of the UK’s health departments make plans to improve vascular disease management and prevention.
Many of the population in Wales are at risk of the condition, which in 2006 killed 11,300 people in the country, because of lifestyle factors such as smoking and lack of exercise.
Ms Hart said: ‘The group will engage with stakeholders and recommend a model to improve the preventative measures around the disease.’
