understanding of the mechanisms underlying drug-free remission in RA could lead to improved treatment strategies. New findings suggest that particular populations of macrophages residing in


the synovial tissue have pro-resolving functions, which might provide important clues and targets for restoring synovial homeostasis. Using single cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), the


researchers characterized the STM populations present in the healthy synovium, in the inflamed synovium of patients with active RA and in the synovium of patients with RA in sustained


disease remission. They identified two main STM populations: MerTKneg and MerTKpos STMs. These two populations contained four and five distinct phenotypic clusters, respectively. This is a
