Access through your institution Buy or subscribe A new study shows that obesity can result from decreased leptin gene (_LEP_) expression. Olof Dallner, Jeffrey Friedman and colleagues report

that defects in _LEP_ expression can cause a form of obesity that is characterized by reduced circulating levels of leptin. The authors found that this form of obesity is responsive to

leptin therapy. In the present study, the authors used transgenic leptin–luciferase reporter mice to map _cis_-elements that regulate _LEP_. “It is necessary to study _LEP_ expression in
