Access through your institution Buy or subscribe To counteract this pesky dew condensation, Iwan Haechler and his co-workers from ETH Zurich, Switzerland have developed and tested a

transparent, sunlight-activated, photothermal coating, and showed its anti- and de-fogging effects in a field experiment (pictured) (_Nat. Nanotechnol_.

https://doi.org/10.1038/s41565-022-01267-1; 2022). The coating design of the Swiss scientists works by achieving high broadband absorption of the infrared part of the solar spectrum while

allowing visible light to be transmitted to maintain high transparency for the glasses. In other words, the coating harvests solar energy invisible to the human eye, where nearly half of the

solar energy lies. The absorbed energy is dissipated as heat and thus causes a small rise in the temperature of the coated sample, which is sufficient to exponentially decrease the

nucleation rate of water droplets. This is a preview of subscription content, access via your institution ACCESS OPTIONS Access through your institution Access Nature and 54 other Nature
