ABSTRACT The micelles formed with pentaoxyethylene C12E5 and heptaoxyethylene C12E7 dodecyl ethers and heptaoxyethylene tetradecyl ether C14E7 in dilute aqueous solutions were characterized

by static (SLS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments at several temperatures _T_ below the critical points. The SLS results were successfully analyzed by using a thermodynamic

theory formulated with wormlike spherocylinder model for SLS of micelle solutions, thereby yielding the molar mass _M_w of the micelles as a function of _c_ along with the cross-sectional

diameter _d_. The radius of gyration 〈_S_2〉1/2 and the hydrodynamic radius _R_H of the micelles as functions of _M_w were found to be also well described by the corresponding theories for

the wormlike spherocylinder or wormlike chain models. Combining the present and previous results for various C_i_Ej (polyoxyethylene alkyl ether) micelles, effects of the hydrophobic (alkyl)

_i_ and hydrophilic (oxyethylene) chain length _j_ on the micellar characteristics have been clarified as: (i) The micellar length _L_ becomes larger for larger _i_ and smaller _j_. (ii)

The _d_ values do not significantly vary with the values of _i_ and _j_. (iii) The stiffness parameter λ−1 decreases with increasing _i_ at fixed _j_ and increases with increasing _j_ at

fixed _i_. (iv) The spacing _s_ between adjacent oxyethylene tails of the surfactant molecule on the micellar surface gradually increases with increasing _i_ and _j_. SIMILAR CONTENT BEING
