ABSTRACT The reproduction of animal cells is regulated by growth factors in the environment and the gene and gene products that respond to and interact with these growth factors. The genes
that play a role in cell reproduction can be grouped under the term of growth–related genes and include cellular oncogenes, wild type alleles of cell cycle mutants and growth–regulated
genes. The extent of cell proliferation in a population of cells is determined largely at the G0–G1 interface. Although it has been customary to study the regulation of cell proliferation in
the early stages of the G0 to S transition, evidence seems to indicate we have been looking in the wrong place and the critical, proliferation–specific events may occur in mid or late G1.
