ABSTRACT B LYMPHOCYTES1, polymorphonuclear cells2, mast cells3 and cells of the macrophage–monocyte2 series possess surface receptors for the Fc portion of the immunoglobulin molecule. In
some cases the functions of this receptor is clearly understood but this is not true for B lymphocytes. It has been suggested that the Fc receptor on B cells plays a role in the localisation
of antigen in the form of antigen–antibody complexes4. We propose an alternative hypothesis that the Fc receptor on B cells is a membrane receptor (termed the proreceptor) for the
