ABSTRACT DRS STARR AND OORT REPLY: Hawson's contention that local changes in instruments and in the method of reducing the data would explain the downward trend in hemispheric mean


temperature seems highly improbable. These factors may be important in the case of a few radiosonde stations used in the analyses. In our sample of more than 600 upper air stations, however,


the instruments and procedures between different countries vary so widely that the quite systematic changes are more compatible with the interpretation of a real 5-yr trend. Access through
