The Met Office has issued two red weather warnings ahead of Storm Éowyn. Very strong winds associated with Storm Éowyn will bring "very dangerous conditions" with widespread
disruption to Northern Ireland and Scotland, where the red warnings have been issued. This is the first red warning issued for Northern Ireland since the Met Office moved to impact-based
warnings in 2011. Amber and yellow warnings for snow, rain and wind are in place for the rest of the UK. People in red warning areas have been warned not to travel. The warning in Northern
Ireland is in place from 7am to 2pm on Friday, whereas the one in Scotland is in place from 10am to 5pm. The Met Office's warning for Northern Ireland states: "Southwesterly then
westerly winds will rapidly increase from west to east during the Friday morning rush hour with peak gusts of 80-90mph fairly widely and perhaps up to 100mph along some exposed coasts. This
brings the risk of significant disruption to transport and power supplies, as well as dangerous conditions outdoors. Winds will gradually ease from the south through Friday afternoon."
Red warnings - the highest category of severe weather - are rarely issued in the UK. Brits have even been warned about the possibility of tornadoes battering parts of the country as Éowyn is
set to sweep in later today Thursday. Gusts could peak as high as 150kph (93mph), according to weather maps from WXCharts. The fiercest winds look set to hit across Northern Ireland
including Belfast, as well Cumbria, the North East and southern parts of Scotland, including Edinburgh and Glasgow. The Met Office said: "All eyes are on Storm Éowyn which will arrive
on Friday. The wettest and windiest conditions will be during the morning in the south but damaging winds will last throughout the day further north. Severe weather warnings are in place, so
keep up to date with the forecast." The national weather agency said as part of the red warnings issued today: "Keep yourself and others safe; avoid travelling by road during
potentially dangerous conditions. It is not safe to drive in these conditions. "Don't risk injury to others or damage to your property. If you can do so safely, check for loose
items outside your home and secure them. Items include; bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds, and fences."
