Nintendo Switch 2 launch: How powerful is it compared to PS5 and Xbox Series X?Here's what you need to know about the performance differences between the Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5 and

the horizon, many gamers will be wondering whether it's worth investing the £395.99 in another console to add to their growing collection. After all, the almost £400 price tag is a

significant investment, and if you already own an Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5, is there any real point in picking up Nintendo's latest handheld?

If it's a raw performance comparison you're looking for, you're in luck as new details regarding the Nintendo Switch 2's internal components has been revealed ahead of its June 5 launch

date. Using a customer Nvidia chip, we can gauge the relative performance of the Switch 2 compared to the current console crop.

One numerical way of measuring graphics performance is in Teraflops (TFLOPs), which is a term used to describe how many calculations a computer component can complete in a single second.

There are plenty of additional factors that can affect a video game's 'performance', but TFLOPs are a good general ball-park of figuring out what a console is capable of.

According to Digital Foundry, the Nintendo Switch 2 will pack 3.072 TFLOPs when running in docked mode, with this dropping down to 1.71 TFLOPs in handheld. By comparison, the PS5 is capable

of 10.28 TFLOPs,. while the Xbox Series X packs 12.155.

Comparing the three, you can see that the Nintendo Switch 2 is much less powerful than the current generation consoles in terms of raw performance. However, that's not the whole picture as

Nintendo is also utilising some modern software wizardry to bridge the gap a little further.

Nvidia's Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology has been around for several years now on PC graphics cards, with Sony starting to utilise the same tech in the PS5 Pro (PSSR). It

works by rendering a game's graphics at a lower resolution, like 480p for example, and then using AI algorithms to upscale that image to one that more closely resembles the display

resolution of 1080p or even 4K.

The Nintendo Switch 2 has a 1080p, 120Hz portable screen.(Image: Joshua Boyles) The result is far less taxing on a computer's hardware, allowing developers to render more complex scenes at

higher frame rates - an ideal scenario for a portable console like the Nintendo Switch 2. As such, you can likely expect slightly better performance from the Switch 2 than the raw TFLOP

figures portray.

With that said, the Nintendo Switch 2 is not intended to be a pixel pusher by any means. While the Xbox Series X and PS5 are targeted towards gamers who really care about how their games

look and feel, the Switch 2 is intended for a more broader audience - one that cares more about taking their games on the go than pixel peeping shadow resolution.

For example, the Xbox and PlayStation regularly target a 4K resolution and 60 frames per second output of most games. However, the Switch 2 will look to target 1080p in handheld mode, with

only a few games running at a native 4K resolution when in docked.

As such, if you're considering whether to pick up a Nintendo Switch 2 over an Xbox Series X or a PS5, it's best to consider the sort of games you're going to be playing. If you're super keen

to play the likes of Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza, the Switch 2 is a no-brainer as that's the only console you can play those games on.

The Switch 2 is also the only console of the bunch that can be played portably, opening up an entire new world of scenarios of playing games where you previously couldn't. However, if you're

someone who plays a lot of games on their TV and deeply cares about frame rates and resolution, you'd likely be better off with one of the existing current generation consoles.

Article continues below Here are the best places to pick up either a PlayStation 5 or an Xbox Series X right now. Bear in mind that the Nintendo Switch 2 is currently out of stock at most

retailers, but we'll report back on launch day with regular stock updates, so stay tuned.
