FORECASTERS HAVE WARNED THAT SOME PARTS OF THE HOLIDAY HOTSPOT POSE AN 'IMPORTANT RISK' 11:03, 29 May 2025 Weather warnings have been issued across Spain this week as temperatures
soar to 40C in a popular holiday destination. An Iberian heatwave is set to hit parts of Europe this week, bringing searing temperatures and warnings to holidaymakers. According to Aemet,
Spain’s national weather agency, the worst-hit areas will be Seville and Cordoba in the south of Spain, reaching temperatures of 39C and 40C, respectively. The weather agency has issued a
rare amber alert for Seville, a holiday hotspot for Brits, rating the risk level as 'important'. The warning comes into force at 1pm local time until 8.59pm on Thursday (May 29).
Amber warnings for Seville remain in place on Friday (May 30) and Saturday (May 31). Yellow alerts have been issued for Cordoba, Morena and Condado, Guadalquivir Valley of Jaén, Southern
Huesca, Lower Aragon of Teruel, Zaragoza 's Ebro Riverbank, Central depression of Lleida, Central depression of Tarragona, Vegas del Guadiana Badajoz, The Siberian Extremadura,
Villuercas and Montánchez, Minho of Ourense Ribera del Ebro in Navarre and Ebro Riverbank of La Rioja. The Aemet forecast states: "High maximum temperatures for the season are expected
across most of the Iberian Peninsula, with temperatures expected to exceed 34-36 degrees Celsius on the southern Atlantic slope and in the northeast, and even locally in northwest valleys.
"Temperatures exceeding 38-40 degrees Celsius are likely on the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers in Extremadura." Aemet added: "Winds will blow from the north and east in the
Cantabrian Sea, with northerly winds shifting to westerly winds in the Empordà and Menorca regions, and easterly winds along the southeastern coasts of the Iberian Peninsula and the Alboran
coasts, with strong gusts and some very strong gusts in the Strait of Gibraltar." The Spanish forecaster has put the extreme conditions down to the presence of a "powerful
anticyclone" in the Azores which will reach the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands which will carry warm, dry and dusty air from Africa over Andalusia, the Alboran Sea and the
central peninsula. Holidaymakers in Seville may also see UV levels reaching 10. Met Office advice for a UV level of that scale is to spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm. Humidity is
set to sit around 40 per cent during the mornings and drop during the day. The Met Office said on X, formerly Twitter: "The heat is building across Spain, Portugal and parts of the
Mediterranean this week and temperatures of over 40 Celsius are possible in places." Article continues below The warning comes as holidaymakers in the Canary Islands have been warned
they may experience Saharan dust clouds. Known as 'calima', the weather phenomenon occurs when dust from the Sahara desert blows across the Spanish archipelago, creating a hot dry
fog. Calima can cause temperatures to rise. During more extreme calimas, people are urged to stay indoors, keeping windows and doors shut. It's also important to stay hydrated.
