Loose women's janet street-porter personal loss in contaminated blood scandal

THE PANEL SPOKE ABOUT ITV'S LATEST DOCUMENTARY ON THE INFECTED BRITISH BLOOD SCANDAL 13:50, 21 May 2025 Loose Women's Janet Street-Porter opened up about a personal loss she faced

when a friend received contaminated blood during surgery. During Wednesday's (May 21) installment, Christine Lampard headed the panel as she was joined by Denise Welch, Janet

Street-Porter and Jane Moore. The ladies sat down and kicked off their discussion with the infected blood scandal that saw more than 30,000 individuals in the UK infected with HIV and

hepatitis C during the 1970s and 1980s. It was first used for haemophiliacs who have a rare genetic condition which means their blood does not clot properly. Janet Street-Porter shared:

"This is a story of four boys, now men, who went to a college in the west country, they were really excited" as the panel discussed the latest ITV documentary, The British Blood

Scandal: Poisoned at School, that looks into the scandal. ITV described the documentary as: "Centres on the tragic personal stories of the haemophiliac children at the Lord Mayor

Treloar School in Hampshire, who were sent to the specialist boarding school with the promise of a ‘normal childhood’ but instead became victims of secret medical research which left many of

them with Hepatitis and HIV. It follows the stories of the few remaining survivors as they fight for truth and justice." Jo Clinton-Davis, Controller of Factual ITV said: "As they

continue their fight for justice, the raw truth of how thousands were affected by the 1970s and 1980s infected blood scandal is told by some of the last remaining victims themselves in this

emotional documentary. It’s shocking how these men have suffered all these years from something that was covered up and could have been prevented." Janet described how the NHS

"bought the blood from America and this is the route of the huge, huge scandal" as they had taken blood from drug users in prison and poor, deprived areas. She continued:

"When the NHS found out the Americans then heated the blood but the NHS still used the contaminating blood, that’s the scandal" before referring to it as "awful". The

star then opened up about her own personal loss due to contaminated blood, as she shared: "I had a friend who received contaminated blood in an operation and he’s dead now" after a

routine surgery. Denise Welch then interjected: "If you’ve got 12 billion pounds and those people have a bank account, why is it years" before the victims get paid. Article
