This morning star says ‘you just can’t imagine it’ after colleague's death

21 May 2025 This Morning star Sian Welby has opened up about the moment she learnt one of her radio colleagues had died while she was on-air. Sian, 38, was on Capital Radio with Roman Kemp,

32, when the pair learnt producer Joe Lyons had taken his own life in 2020. Joe and Roman became best friends during their time on Capital Breakfast. Roman, son of former Spandau Ballet star

Martin Kemp, has previously said Joe’s death was part of the reason why he quit the station last year. He told The Mirror it felt as though he was reliving the trauma of losing a friend

each day. He said: “I went through such a horrible moment in that room, in that studio. Four years on and I've been living that same day over and over again, without the awful

event." "For me, I'm quite ready to go, 'OK, close that door now, don't keep going back living that horrible day over again'. That's sad that obviously

affects me, but it does. Every day I walk in there and I see Joe. That's a weird thing to do.” Article continues below Roman, who now presents The One Show with Alex Jones, felt it

would be “really good for me to move on with my life”. On the Turning Point podcast with singer Lulu, Sian recalled learning about Joe’s death. She said: “You just can’t imagine it. Everyone

has a moment in their life where they have that fear if someone hasn’t come home or if someone is late for something and you try not to go to the worst case scenario because you think, ‘Oh,

it’ll be fine, I’m sure there’s an explanation why’. For us it was why Joe hadn’t come to work, because he was always the first one in.” Lulu said Joe was “always reliable” but “had some

sadness in him”. To which Sian replied: “None of us knew and you’d never know. I have lost other friends the same way and they’re always the same. Life and soul, lovely, fun characters.

“Everyone loved him, all of the celebrities loved him. He’d come in and look after all of the guests and everyone knew producer Joe. Everyone adored him.” Sian admits she feels as though she

“never really processed” Joe’s death. She added: “It’s like I can’t believe it’s real. It was so shocking and came so out of nowhere that I think a lot of us haven’t really. After Joe’s

death, Roman went on to make a documentary about men’s mental health, titled Our Silent Emergency. Sian now presents the Capital Radio breakfast show with former Radio One stars Jordan North

and Chris Stark. Sian praised her new colleagues, adding: “There’s something magical happening with us three that’s hard to explain. It could just be the timing, where we all are in life,
