2025The Reliance Street tip in Newton Heath(Image: Google Maps) A Greater Manchester tip will be closed for a year from the end of this month so ‘vital improvements’ can be made.

Bosses at the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) have announced the Reliance Street household waste and recycling centre will close on June 29.

‌ It’s for a programme of upgrades which could take up to a year, they added.

‌ Work includes creating more parking bays to improve traffic flow, making more space for containers so they can recycle more types of items, and installing a donation container for items

too good to throw away.

A new ‘Renew shop’ will also be added to the Newton Heath tip, which will ‘no longer need to close for short periods throughout the day when full containers are moved and changed’ after the

revamp.

Article continues below(Image: Copyright Unknown) “These improvement works at our Reliance Street site are essential and it’s great that work will be getting underway soon,” said Coun Tom

Ross, the GMCA’s lead on waste. “Adding a donation container and a Renew Shop are a particular benefit to the residents that use Reliance Street, with the money raised going to many great

causes.”

The site is managed by firm Suez, and its regional manager Andrew Bewicke said residents will feel the benefit of the new facilities.

Article continues below He explained: “Local residents will see a much more modern recycling centre when these improvement works are complete. These are exciting changes which will allow us

to collect more types of items for recycling and provide a better customer experience.”

The closure means Manchester will only have two tips open for much of the next 12 months, but residents from the city are able to use recycling centres in other boroughs free of charge.

The nearest alternative household waste and recycling centres to Reliance Street are Ash Road in Droylsden (M43 6QU), two-and-a-half miles away; Arkwright Street in Oldham (OL9 9LZ), four

miles away; and Spring Vale in Middleton (M24 2HQ), 4.3 miles away.
