2025 Jeremie Frimpong admitted his departure from Manchester City was sparked after the club told him he wasn't get enough to play for the senior team. The 24-year-old was officially

Leverkusen. The Dutch international has returned to England six years after leaving the City academy where he spent nine years. Joining the club at 10 years old, the wing-back made it all

the way to under-23 level but never turned out for the senior team. Despite spending almost a decade with the club, Frimpong realised his time in Manchester had come to an end after

conducting discussions over a new contract in 2019. Speaking to SportBible in early 2024, the Bundesliga champion admitted that it was a frank confession from the club regarding his ability

to break through into the first team that left him realising his future was elsewhere. "I kept playing [an age group] down and I think when I was under-23’s at City, I remember going in

for a new contract and that’s when I knew my path at City was different," he said. Article continues below "They were talking about how I couldn’t get into the team and were

comparing me to other players in the academy that were doing better than me. I thought: 'Yeah, I clearly don’t have a future here'’ so I’ve got to take a different step. "I

remember going to that meeting and he was saying: 'You’re too small,' and it’ll be too physical. That’s when I was thinking: 'Oh s***, where am I gonna go?'"

It's been quite the career progression for Frimpong since his City exit as he's gone on to become a league champion with Celtic and Leverkusen while becoming a regular on the

international stage with Netherlands. His arrival at Anfield increases the Dutch contingent that exists at the club with Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch with Arne Slot at

the helm. In contrast to his conversations he had with City that sparked his exit, Frimpong said Slot only had positive things to say to him when they talked about the impact he'll make

within the team next season. Article continues below "I spoke to the manager a few times," he told LFCTV. "He sounds very positive. He says I can bring a lot of energy and my

qualities, my speed. "Especially when a manager is talking positively about you, it gives you very good confidence that he believes in you. I’ve had good conversations with him.

"I’m really excited [to work with Arne Slot]. Even when I was at [the] national team, some of the Feyenoord boys would tell me about him and be like: 'He’s the best coach I’ve ever

had.' Things like this. So, I’ve always heard good things about the coach. Now he’s going to be my coach, so I’m excited for that."
