RHODES HAS BEEN HIT BY A 6.2-SCALE EARTHQUAKE THIS MORNING, WHILE TURKEY WAS HIT BY A 5.8 QUAKE 07:55, 03 Jun 2025 Tourists in western Turkey and the Greek islands were awakened on Monday


night as a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck near the popular holiday destination of Rhodes. The earthquake struck about 29km north of Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese islands near the


Turkey border, at around 2.17am (local time). According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre the quake happened at a depth of 68km. The shockwaves were felt across parts of


southern Greece, western Turkey, and coastal areas of the Aegean Sea, local reports said. A nearby earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale hit Marmaris ,Turkey, in the early hours of


this morning. Acar Unlu, the mayor of the Turkish resort town of Marmaris, told NTV broadcast that the region was jolted by the earthquake, prompting disaster management teams to be


dispatched to assess the damage. It has been reported that at last 69 people were injured in Turkey after jumping from buildings to flee the area, and a 14-year-old girl has sadly died,


according to the Mirror. Marmaris governor Idris Akbiyik reposted a tweet that confirmed the 69 people were injured after jumping out of the windows of their houses but the quake did not


cause any damage in Marmaris itself. It also confirmed the sad news that the teenage girl has died. Article continues below Over 282 reports have been made to the United States Geological


Survey (USGS) about the earthquake in Marmaris that was measured at 74km deep. A message sent by TUI to a British tourist currently holidaying in Rhodes reads: "Dear Guests. We would


like to inform you that an earthquake occurred at 02.17am with a magnitude of 6.6 on the Richter scale. The epicentre was located approximately 18 kilometres from Rhodes, at a depth of 68


kilometres (42 miles). Article continues below "Local authorities are currently assessing the situation. At this time, there are no reports of significant damage or injuries. As a


precaution, please remain calm and follow any safety instructions provided by your accommodation or local officials. "Should any specific action be required on your part, rest assured


that we will contact you directly with further guidance. Your safety and well-being are our top priority." The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) have not yet issued


any warnings for Brits traveling to Rhodes or Turkey. The travel agency provides advice about risks of travel to help British nationals make informed decisions.
